Paintings and Woodcuts

Some earlier paintings, landscapes and figures

Since the first lockdown I’ve been painting a series of canvasses about my local pubs. I thought, if I can’t go to them, I’ll recreate the atmosphere as paintings instead.

When moving my etching studio from the Leadmill to Yorkshire ArtSpace I found out a cog had rusted and stuck on my press. It was so cold and windy on the top floor of the Leadmill. I now had a large studio but as I couldn’t etch or print, I decided to paint the brilliant clouds I could see from my studio.

Heys Lane is a road from Great Harwood to Clayton-le-Moors.  It was the way home from the Butcher Brig to my parents house.

These woodcuts are 90 x 60 cm. They are printed on the etching press with one run through.  The variations in tone are achieved by manipulating the surface of the wood block.

A selection of my reduction woodcuts.

I’ve made three prints this way, using a combination of screen printing, spraying through stencils and using latex. They are printed onto full, uncut sheets of Somerset paper, 76 x 56 cm
